Introduction The modern world is awash with unsolicited information: from junk mail to spam E Mails and text messages and most irritating of all, computer generated cold calling. With some success we counter this deluge of unwanted information by adopting crude filtering strategies to make life bearable, whilst we readily adopting modern technology to seek out the contacts and information we think we need. The world of Military Operations operates in this information jungle where the ability to exploit information and filter what is needed to shed light is as important as raw firepower. Todays Operations This Symposium first sets as its backdrop not the Iraq conflict but its aftermath. A situation where operations routinely take place, sometimes simultaneously, at widely differing levels of intensity; a mixture of peace-keeping and policing through to suicide bombers, ambushes and pitched battles. Obtaining information, applying Rules of engagement and exercising Command and Control is a challenge when faced with an enemy made up of an eclectic mix of urban based insurgents, able to operate without constraint or consideration for the population or their own lives. The scene is set from the perspective of a Senior Commander of MND(SE) where information superiority is sought with the appropriate blend of organisation, information and technology. The focus then switches to the needs of the command chain, the provision of OPINTEL and operational resources, and the complementary management of the logistic chain. Accomplishment of effective information management in support of operations is achieved through the development of doctrine, the imposition of policy and the creation of the necessary system architecture and tools. Each is addressed with especial emphasis on the vital parts played by DII and the information challenge that Carrier Strike brings. Challenges We conclude our examination of this key topic with expert speakers addressing the challenges presented by the introduction into service of a whole range of sensor systems. The final presentation examines the techniques available for trawling for information in pursuit of relevant intelligence appropriate to the operation or activity in hand. The Symposium will end with an informed summary of the present situation, potential solutions and required objectives.
