Cyber Security: Make it, break it or automate it? – David Carroll – CEO XQ Cyber

Facebook CISO Alex Stamos launched a withering attack on the cybersecurity industry in his 2017 Black Hat keynote. ‘Too much focus on technically complex “stunt” hacks’, ‘not enough help for the mass of people to stay safe,’ he said. ‘Be more diverse and show more empathy,’ he said, ‘before it gets worse’.

Stamos identifies one of the biggest issues facing the cybersecurity industry today. Namely, that it’s far more fun to break stuff than it is to fix it. Who wants to be a goat when you can be a lion? This has profound implications for our industry and a negative impact for the wider economy. Over the course of the session we’ll explore the impact of our lack of ‘diversity and empathy’, and ask what we can do to encourage the nation’s poachers to turn gamekeeper.
